Renault Clio: Intermediate shaft: Removal - Refitting

REMOVAL
I - REMOVAL PREPARATION OPERATION
- Disconnect the battery (see Battery: Removal - Refitting).

- Remove:
- the mounting clips (1) from the lower trim of the
driver's side dashboard,
- the lower trim (2) of the driver's side dashboard.
- Remove:
- the bolt-cover protective strip,
- the instrument panel's side cover.

- Remove:
- the lower cover mounting bolts (3),
- the lower cover mounting clip (5).
- Unclip the lower cover (4).
- Disconnect the various connectors (depending on
equipment level).
- Remove the lower cover.
II - OPERATION FOR REMOVAL OF PART
CONCERNED
- Lift the floor carpet to access the universal joint bolt.

- Remove the steering column universal joint cover
(6) (do not keep).
- Set the wheels straight ahead.

- Remove:
- the universal joint bolt (7) (do not keep),
- the universal joint nut (do not keep).
- the intermediate shaft bolt (8) on the column,
- the intermediate shaft (9).
REFITTING
I - REFITTING PREPARATION OPERATION
- Always replace the universal joint bolt and cam nut
after each removal.
II - REFITTING OPERATION FOR PART
CONCERNED
- Refit the intermediate shaft in its original position.
WARNING
Do not separate the two sliding parts of the intermediate
shaft.

- Ensure that the steering column universal joint cam
nut and bolt are fitted the right way round.
Note:
- always replace the steering column universal
joint bolt and cam nut (6) each time they are
removed.
- on a new intermediate shaft, the universal joint
cam nut is prefitted; do not remove the cover (6)
- Refit the intermediate shaft to the column.
- Pretighten the mounting bolt of the shaft on the column.
- Pull the intermediate shaft to make sure that the bolt
is present in the neck
- Refit:
- the universal joint,
- the universal joint cam nut and bolt.
- Pretighten the universal joint cam nut and bolt.
- Pull the intermediate shaft to make sure that the bolt
is present in the neck
- Tighten to torque:
- the universal joint bolt on the steering rack (24
Nm),
- the bolt on the steering column (32 Nm).
- Refit the floor carpet.
Note:
Check that the floor carpet reaches under the
accelerator pedal end-stop.
III - FINAL OPERATION
- Refit the lower cover.
- Connect the various connectors (depending on
equipment level).
- Engage the lower cover clips.
- Refit:
- the lower cover mounting clip,
- the lower cover mounting bolts,
- the instrument panel's side cover,
- the bolt-cover protective strip,
- the lower trim of the driver's side dashboard,
- the mounting clips on the lower trim of the driver's
side dashboard.
- Connect the battery (see Battery: Removal - Refitting).

IMPORTANT
Do not remove any steering column component.
Note:
During fault finding, the Service warning light
flashes at
SEE MORE:
With the engine switched off and on
level ground, the level when cold must
be between the MINI and MAXI marks
on reservoir 1.
Top this level up when cold before it
reaches the MINI mark.
When working in the engine
compartment, ensure that
the windscreen wiper stalk
is in
WITHOUT SPORT SEATS, and DOCUMENTATION PHASE 2
IMPORTANT
Before beginning work on any component of the
safety system, it is essential to lock the airbag computer
using the Diagnostic tool (see Airbag and
pretensioners: Precautions for the repair) (88C,
Airbag and pretensioners). When this function
